BorderCrossings – Shostakovich BACH

Serra Tavsanli
Excerpts of Dmitri Schostakowitsch’s “Preludes” (op. 34) are combined with pieces from the “Wohltemperierten Klavier” by J.S. Bach. Although from different centuries, both compositions share an approximately 20-year period of creation. Both works will be interwoven so as to raise the question ‘Where does Bach end and where does Schostakowitsch begin?’. The seamless, harmonious transitions create the appeal of the connection of the two compositions which are separated by several centuries, but which are closely related at the same time.
The concert will be accompanied by a projection of artistic works by Degenhardt Andrulat. The projection depicts artistic working processes accompanied by piano playing. Thus, a video show with live music comes into being. The visual accompaniment frames the musical balancing act. With this, the BachFest Rostock 2019 will witness a premiere – musically as well as artistically. The premiere will be made accessible to the public outside the concert hall via livestream.
